Chinese New Year is upon us, and this year is the year of the Tiger. In the Chinese zodiac, Tigers are courageous, confident, active, ambitious, and generous. They have a keen sense of justice and a commitment to help others. That’s definitely something worth celebrating!

Manchester has one of the largest Chinese populations in the UK, making it a great place to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Here are some of the events around the city you can enjoy: 

Chinatown Celebrations 

There’s no better place to ring in the Year of the Tiger than in Manchester’s own Chinatown. Complete with illuminated Dragons, traditional lion dances, and acrobatics, this event is one not to miss. There’s also street food, live performances, stalls, and workshops.

  • Date and time: 6 Feb, 7am –11pm (Illuminated dragon 4pm –7pm) 

The New Year Tiger

Erected in the centre of Manchester, this stunning tiger sculpture is constructed to look like a delicate children’s press-out toy. Made from wood and recycled materials, it represents both the strength and fragility of the natural world. At night, it is lit up to create a beautiful, stripped illusion.

  • Place: St. Ann’s Square 
  • Date: 1 Feb – 6 Feb  

Lunar New Year at GRUB

One of Manchester’s most popular student hang-out spots, GRUB, is hosting a Lunar New Year celebration as part of its street food pop-up offerings. Swing by to check out some of the best Chinese street food in the city, as well as a mini makers-market showcasing local Asian artists. The evening is rounded off with gin tasting and a screening of Kung Foo Hustle.

K-Club Lunar New Year Party 

The Manchester K-Pop Dance team is hosting a Lunar New Year party for international students of all backgrounds. The party is co-hosted by K-club, a DJ collective that runs regular parties celebrating K-pop and Asian culture.
